Rights to Seeds, Rights of Seeds: Artistic Practice, Agrobiodiversity and Policy Change

  • Event | 25 Nov 2026

Abstract

How can artistic practice move from raising awareness to shaping policy?

Through Rights to Seeds, Rights of Seeds, Cooking Sections explores seed sovereignty, agrobiodiversity and the legal frameworks that govern farmers’ ability to preserve and exchange seeds. In conversation with food ecologist Nadia El-Hage Scialabba, who was a policymaker with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and farmer Davide Palmieri, based in Southern Italy, the session examines how artistic research can convene farmers, experts and policymakers, influence policy debates, and create changes in policy in unexpected and creative ways whilst working with institutional and legal constraints.

About the Seminar Series

Developed by the Centre for Advanced Studies at the JRC, the Art Science Policy seminar series features case studies of artists and curators who collaborate directly with scientists, policymakers, and public institutions. Each session brings together artistic practitioners and their scientific, policy or institutional collaborators to examine how artistic and curatorial practices can contribute to policymaking in concrete ways, from research and foresight to policy formulation, consultation, deliberation and implementation.
