Global Lung Cancer Mortality from PM2.5 Exposure in 2022

PM2.5 particles are tiny and can penetrate deep into the lungs. There is a strong link between them and an increased risk of lung cancer. Take a look at the 'Lung Cancer Mortality Attributable to PM2.5 in 2022' map.

  • News | 04 Feb 2026

The map displays estimated lung cancer deaths linked to exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in 2022, highlighting notable regional differences. PM2.5 particles are tiny enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and have been strongly associated with an increased risk of cancer.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) uses the EDGAR global emissions database to track where air pollutants are released. These emissions are then processed through the FASST modelling tool, which combines emissions data with population information from the UN World Population Prospects and health statistics from the Global Burden of Disease. This integrated approach allows us to estimate population exposure to outdoor air pollution and quantify its resulting health impacts, including lung cancer mortality.
