Innovative methods for characterisation of conditioned radioactive waste

The CHANCE project addressed the specific and complex issue of the characterisation (both physicochemical and radiological) of conditioned radioactive waste by means of non-destructive analytical (NDA) techniques and methodologies.

  • Publication | 2026

This document describes three innovative techniques for characterisation of conditioned radioactive waste developed and tested in the frame of the Characterization of conditioned nuclear waste for its safe disposal in Europe (CHANCE) project:

  • A 200 L calorimeter with lowered detection limits for measuring plutonium and other possibly hidden radionuclides in realistic cases with 200 L drums.
  • A muon scattering tomography system, a non-invasive method which allows for the production of 3D images of closed and high-density objects, well suited to non-destructive assaying for the characterisation of radioactive waste packages.
  • Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) as an innovative technique to characterise outgassing from radioactive waste by developing a new instrumentation for 36Cl measurement, applicable to the monitoring of the radiocarbon from irradiated graphite.
