Bridging the Gap: Data Interoperability for Agricultural Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

On 22 October 2026, the JRC is organising a technical dialogue on improving data interoperability between agricultural data systems and Life Cycle Assessment to support environmental assessment, policy and the EU bioeconomy.

  • Event | 22 Oct 2026

The integration of primary agricultural data into Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies is essential for robust assessments of the environmental profile of food and bio-based products. However, significant "data silos" remain between farm-level data management systems and environmental impact databases.

About the workshop

Taking place on 22 October 2026, this one-day technical event explores the current landscape of data interoperability, with a focus on the interplay between agricultural data and supply chain data used in LCA.

The morning session features high-level strategic perspectives from European institutions on the harmonization of data frameworks and regulatory requirements.

Case studies on the use of existing agricultural databases in LCA are then presented, helping to define methods and protocols and setting the stage for improved environmental modelling. These include national database initiatives, private sector solutions, academic research and relevant international experiences.

The goal is to establish a roadmap for seamless data flow in support of agricultural and food policies, as well as the EU bioeconomy.
