Produced by UN Women and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the “Gender snapshot” is the world’s leading source of data on gender equality and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Drawing from more than 100 data sources, it tracks progress on gender equality across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The 2026 edition focuses on women's leadership and decision-making. The report indicates that parity in national parliaments will not be reached for another 63 years, that 144 of 175 chief justices globally are men. A 2026 survey of national gender equality mechanisms reveals that one in three saw an erosion in institutional power over the past two years, among other setbacks. They underline that when women lead, gender-responsive policies are prioritised and progress is made across the SDGs, and they call for reversing the dismantling of gender equality institutions, combating discriminatory social norms and investing in inclusive leadership and women's rights organizations. Regarding SDG2, the report highlights that Conflict, overlapping crises and shrinking humanitarian and development financing are deepening food insecurity, with women consistently worse off: 23.6 per cent of women were moderately or severely food insecure in 2025, against 22.7 per cent of men. Gender gaps in productive resources are part of the problem and, according to the report, closing gaps in farm productivity and agricultural wages could cut global food insecurity by 2 percentage points, or roughly 45 million people.
