Nutrition data from SMART surveys conducted since January 2026 recorded Critical levels of acute malnutrition across much of Greater Darfur. New evidence points to a sharp increase in severe acute malnutrition admissions in South Darfur and North Darfur, including in several areas previously identified as at risk of Famine in the May 2026 IPC acute food insecurity analysis. Across Greater Kordofan, ongoing conflict, mass displacement, poor rainfall, and restricted livelihood opportunities are further worsening food security and reducing harvest prospects.
The outlook is increasingly alarming as El Niño is driving severe drought conditions across more than half of Sudan, resulting in crop failures, water deficits, reduced agricultural recovery, declining incomes, and rising cereal prices.
Humanitarian operations are struggling to meet rising needs due to major funding shortfalls and insecurity, as well as access constraints in Greater Kordofan. Without an immediate and substantial scale-up of assistance, worsening food insecurity, acute malnutrition, and excess mortality are likely to intensify.
