The European Commission’s Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD), hosted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) recently released a new version of the Global Biodiversity Data Viewer (GBDV).

The GBDV is an open-access tool that provides country-level biodiversity profiles and an interactive map. Version 2.0 updates the indicators calculated by the Global Biodiversity Data Services (GBDS) and adds new Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework ( KMGBF) relevant indicators from external sources. It also redesigns the Map Explorer and adds new layers. Together, these bring consistent biodiversity evidence from several sources into one place, where it is easy to access. More indicators and map layers will be released soon.

Who will benefit from this work?

Policymakers, EC services (e.g. DG INTPA, EU Delegations), national authorities, researchers, NGOs and regional partners, including the Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centres ( TSCCs).

Who has been/will be involved in this work?

The EC’s Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity leads the work, with funding from DG INTPA. Feedback from users will guide future improvements.

How this contributes to EC priorities?

It supports evidence-based implementation and monitoring of EU and international biodiversity commitments, including the KMGBF, by providing access to metrics and indicators that can support reporting and policy implementation. It also informs policy dialogue and cooperation under the EU’s international partnerships.

What impact might this work have?

GBDV 2.0 enriches the country profiles with updated indicators and new KMGBF-relevant ones, so users can see each country’s biodiversity situation at a glance. With its redesigned interface and new layers, the Map Explorer lets users visualize how biodiversity and the pressures affecting it are distributed. Upcoming improvements on indicators and layers will extend this coverage further. Together, these developments can help decision-makers and partner countries track progress, identify gaps and set priorities for action.
