Growing demands for food, fibre, energy and land for urbanization and other uses, together with pressures from climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and water scarcity, call for more integrated approaches to land-use planning. The Guidelines provide a voluntary, non-binding, participatory and multidisciplinary framework to assess land-use options, balance competing objectives and support sustainable decisions, helping countries enhance synergies across the Rio Conventions and align their implementation at different levels. They place people and land users at the centre while integrating environmental, social and economic considerations, supporting the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, and promoting coherence across national priorities and global commitments.
