Modification of the technology for treatment liquid radioactive waste LRW solidification units was used during INPP operation:
- Since 1987, a plant for bituminization of the concentrate with the activity of 10-5 10-4 Curie/litre;
- Since 2006, an installation for cementation of ion-exchange resins (IER) with the activity of 10-2 10-1 Curie/litre.
After the shutdown of the power units, the specific activity of Cs137 in the concentrate, associated with the handling of spent fuel, increased by more than 10 times. In addition, due to the program reducing the use of chemicals, the amount of the concentrate has decreased.
Cementing of the concentrate only instead of bituminization has several disadvantages discussed in the document.
As a result, from 2020:
1. The fire-hazardous bituminization units and the warehouse of pure bitumen were taken out of operation;
2. The delivery of the bitumen compound with increased specific activity of Cs137 for storage to the canyons of bld.158 has been stopped.
3. An optimal recipe has been developed for the joint processing of perlite pulp, concentrate and IER without increasing the final disposal volume at the cementation plant.
4. The compound is packed in updated standard barrels with an inner polyethene liner, which, while reducing the cost, has led to increased resistance of the package to the aggressive radioactive environment of the compound.
