Highlights of the Livestock Sector Strategy
For all value chains, the livestock sector strategy focuses on six main areas of intervention: feed and fodder development, animal breeding and genetics, health and biosecurity, infrastructure and markets, gender and youth inclusion, and policy coordination. These interventions directly address constraints such as high feed costs, disease prevalence, and limited access of producers to high-value markets. Interventions to improve the productivity and efficiency of the livestock sector also contribute to the mitigation of conflicts related to management of land and water resources. The interventions perform substantially better when implemented as comprehensive packages that simultaneously address identified constraints, rather than as individual interventions. The sector assessment and transformation strategy for each of the prioritised livestock value chains is summarised as follows.
